Flannel Bush 

Scientific Name:

Fremontodendron

Physical Appearance: 

  • Vibrant, yellow flowers 3 inches across 

  • Fuzzy textured leaves with wavy ridges

  • Leaves have a texture reminiscent of flannel (hence the name) 

When Does It Grow: 

  • Spring and summer time!

Preferred Environment: 

  • Part shade and part sun 

Method of Reproduction: 

  • Seeds spread via small animals or wind

Medicinal Uses: 

  • The sap can be used as a topical remedy for skin irritation and gas 

Random: 

  • Drought resistant and fire tolerant

    • With large seed production, rapid growth, and quick maturity levels the plant has evolved to have great attributes to withstand fire

    • Second colonizer (are y’all learning about succession yet?)

  • Native Americans were said to use the wood as a building material or rope for snare hunting 

  • Can be a skin irritant causing itching
