Physical Appearance: 

  • Thin twigs with leaves and grouped tiny, light pink flowers 

  • The flowers eventually produce white berries that look like snowballs clustered together

When Does It Grow: 

  • Berries grow in autumn 

  • Flowers in spring and summer

Preferred Environment: 

  • Along the coast 

  • Mountain ranges 

  • Foothills 

Method of Reproduction: 

  • Attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators 

  • Birds tend to eat the fruit and spread the seeds 

Medicinal Uses: 

  • Has high toxicity levels, but can be used for medicinal purposes if done so properly

  • Saponins (aka a steroid) is found in the plant tissue and can be used to kill parasites or heal wounds

  • The berries are said to be able to produce a soap when crushed and prepared due to their antibacterial qualities

Role in the Ecosystem: 

  • Small birds can use parts of the plant to help build nests and for covering temporary housing

  • Known restoration plant for its good ground covering qualities

  • It is also used for ornamental purposes because of its decadence
